چکیده

To date the strategy for inducing pinning in REBa2Cu3O7−x (REBCO where RE=rare-earth) coated conductors has largely been empirical. Hence, we are not yet at a point where we can dialin the compositions and process parameters to optimise pinning for particular applications having specific temperature, field, and field angle requirements. In this review, we cover the critical materials science aspects which enable the understanding, design and engineering of desired pinning centre morphologies. Our main emphasis is on in in situ epitaxial growth of REBCO films by vapour deposition. We review the optimal pinning centre morphologies which have been determined to be effective for different operation regimes. We also highlight how the interplay of thermodynamics (including epitaxial effects), film-particle interfacial strain, and kinetics determine pinning morphologies. Finally, we also briefly cover pinning in rapid ex situ, liquid assisted growth which is likely to be a necessary universal approach for applications where low cost is critical.

Nanoscale strain-induced pair suppression as a vortex-pinning mechanism in high-temperature superconductors.

Boosting large-scale superconductor applications require nanostructured conductors with artificial pinning centres immobilizing quantized vortices at high temperature and magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate a highly effective mechanism of artificial pinning centres in solution-derived high-temperature superconductor nanocomposites through generation of nanostrained regions where Cooper pair fo...

New Developments in Niobium Titanium Superconductors

After a very active period of Niobium Titanium superconductor strand development in the mid 1980s, progress slowed as the SSC scaled up for production and emphasis moved towards guaranteeing, rather than enhancing performance. However, this period also produced several advances in the understanding of flux pinning in Niobium Titanium alloys and in the fabrication of composites containing artifi...

Enhanced critical-current in P-doped BaFe2As2 thin films on metal substrates arising from poorly aligned grain boundaries

Thin films of the iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Ba122:P) were fabricated on polycrystalline metal-tape substrates with two kinds of in-plane grain boundary alignments (well aligned (4°) and poorly aligned (8°)) by pulsed laser deposition. The poorly aligned substrate is not applicable to cuprate-coated conductors because the in-plane alignment >4° results in exponential decay of th...

Field and temperature scaling of the critical current density in commercial REBCO coated conductors

Scaling relations describing the electromagnetic behaviour of coated conductors (CCs) greatly simplify the design of REBCO-based devices. The performance of REBCO CCs is strongly influenced by fabrication route, conductor architecture and materials, and these parameters vary from one manufacturer to the others. In the present work we have examined the critical surface for the current density, J...

THE EFFECT OF STRAIN ON GRAINS AND GRAIN BOUNDARIES IN YBa2Cu3O7−δ COATED CONDUCTORS (POSTPRINT)

The role of grains and grain boundaries in producing reversible strain effects on the transport current critical current density (Jc) of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) coated conductors that are produced with metal–organic deposition (MOD) was investigated. The strain (ε) dependence of Jc for full-width coated conductors is compared with that for samples in which the current transport was limited to a few ...
